Kashmir is often called "Paradise on Earth," and every season offers a unique face of this breathtaking destination. Understanding when to visit is crucial for the best experience.
Spring is arguably the most photogenic time to visit Kashmir. The famous Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar, Asia's largest tulip garden, bursts into bloom with over 1.5 million tulips in more than 60 varieties. Temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C, making it ideal for sightseeing.
The Dal Lake is at its most beautiful during spring, with flowering gardens reflecting in its calm waters. Shikara rides at dawn reveal a landscape straight from a painting.
Summer is the peak tourist season in Kashmir, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 30°C in the valley. This is when the famous Gulmarg Gondola is fully operational, taking you to Apharwat Peak at over 4,000 metres.
Pahalgam comes alive in summer with lush green meadows perfect for trekking. The Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage season also falls during this period, typically in July-August.
Autumn transforms Kashmir into a canvas of gold, amber, and red as the Chinar trees change colour. This is perhaps the most underrated time to visit - crowds are smaller, prices are lower, and the landscape is absolutely spectacular.
October evenings on the Dal Lake, surrounded by golden Chinar trees reflected in the still water, is an experience that stays with you forever.
Winter brings heavy snowfall, particularly to areas like Gulmarg, which transforms into one of Asia's best ski destinations. If you want to see Kashmir blanketed in white, December through February is your window.
The Gulmarg Ski Resort attracts skiers and snowboarders from across India and internationally during these months.
For first-time visitors, we recommend visiting between March and May (spring) or September and October (autumn) for the best combination of weather, natural beauty, and manageable tourist crowds.
**Travel Zone tip:** Book at least 3 months in advance for spring visits, as accommodation in Srinagar fills up fast during the tulip season.
