India · West India
Land of Royals. Majestic forts, vibrant bazaars, golden sand dunes, and the timeless hospitality of the desert kingdom.
About Rajasthan
Rajasthan packs five centuries of royal architecture into one circuit: the pink bazaars of Jaipur, the blue lanes of Jodhpur's Mehrangarh shadow, the golden sandstone fort-city of Jaisalmer and the white marble lake palaces of Udaipur.
Heritage hotels are the real draw here. Many of the forts and havelis are now hotels, so a stay doubles as sightseeing. We route the trip by train and private car to cut long drive days.
October to March, when days are sunny and desert nights are cold. Avoid May-June, which is very hot.
No visa needed for Indian citizens.
About 2 hours 15 minutes by air to Jaipur; overnight trains also run. Recommended stay: 5 to 8 days.
Top things to do in Rajasthan
Mughal-Rajput palaces, the Hawa Mahal facade and an elephant-free fort ascent by jeep.
Camel safari at Sam dunes, folk music and a night under the stars.
Mehrangarh Fort and the maze of indigo-washed houses below it.
A sunset boat on Lake Pichola beside the City Palace.
